Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt, who was awaiting the TADA court's verdit in the 1993 Mumbai blasts case, has been held guilty under the Arms Act for possession of illegal weapons. He has been however cleared of criminal conspiracy charges.
It is not yet decided whether he would be immediately taken into police custody or he would be served notice first. The minimum sentence for Sanjay Dutt’s charges is 3 years. He had already served a sentence of 18 months, as an undertrial earlier in 1993-94. If convicted, he will be confined to the Unda-Cell or Egg-shaped cell in the Arthur Road jail. According to reports, the unda cell is an isolation cell and is meant for terrorists and hardcore criminals.
Dutt received three AK-56 rifles, its ammunition, 9 mm pistol, its cartridges and hand grenades, which were part of the consignment smuggled by Tiger Memon to set off a series of blasts in Mumbai on March 12, 1993.
